Blog Post: Draft Recap – Thoughts On The How 2022 NBA Draft Played Out

#TeamPlayerInstant Analysis – 6/23/22
MagicPaolo BancheroPF – Duke – HT: 6-10 – WT: 250 – WING: 6-10 – Fr – After most of us expected Jabari Smith Jr. to be the first pick last minute reports came out that Paolo would be the guy. He’s an elite talent, especially on the offensive end and seems like a player who can come in right away and put up numbers in the league. He’s got work to do on his defense but his overall upside is elite.. 1on1 Interview with Paolo
ThunderChet HolmgrenC – Gonzaga – HT: 7-0 – WT: 195 – WING: 7-6 – Fr – The Thunder get their guy in Chet, even though Jabari was still on the board and must have made them think twice. The combination of Chet with the young guards is super intriguing and make the Thunder one of the most exciting young teams in the league.
RocketsJabari Smith Jr.PF – Auburn – HT: 6-10 – WT: 220 – WING: 7-0 – FrAfter being a favorite to go no.1 for much of the draft process Jabari ends up sliding to no.3. He’s an awesome fit with the Rockets and the young core they’re building.
KingsKeegan MurrayPF – Iowa – HT: 6-8 – WT: 215 – WING: NA – So – The Kings looked to trade down but end up staying put and taking the high-scoring forward Keegan Murray who can come in and help them win right away. Passing on Jaden Ivey might come back to bite them but they obviously really liked Murray, and they got their guy.
PistonsJaden Ivey SG – Purdue – HT: 6-4 – WT: 200 – WING: NA – So – Teams will regret passing on Ivey and the Pistons are suddenly stacked in the backcourt after two awesome drafts. Ivey has the type of explosive ability that is extremely rare to find. He’s going to be a star.
PacersBennedict MathurinSG – Arizona (Canada) – HT: 6-6 – WT: 210 – WING: NA – So – Mathurin lands in Indiana, rising all the way to no.6 overall. The Pacers are building a solid young core and Mathurin should be able to contribute from the first game of the season.
BlazersShaedon SharpeSG – Kentucky (Canada) – HT: 6-5 1/4 – WT: 198 – WING: 6-11 1/2 – Fr – The Blazers have been rumored to want to trade down but end up staying put (for now) and selecting the high upside wing Shaedon Sharpe. He’s a mystery man but has as much upside as any player in this class.
PelicansDyson DanielsPG – G League Ignite (Australia) – HT: 6-7 1/2 – WT: 195 – WING: 6-10 1/2 – Int.03 – Daniels is such a sweet fit on this Pelicans team giving them another elite defender and versatile player. They are building something special.
SpursJeremy SochanPFBaylor – HT: 6-9 – WT: 230 – WING: 7-0 – Fr – Sochan completes a massive rise from not being the most heralded recruit to going top 10 in the NBA Draft. He’s a feisty, versatile defender who knows how to get under the skin of his opponents. A very Spurs type of player.
WizardsJohnny Davis SG – Wisconsin – HT: 6-5 3/4 – WT: 196 – WING: 6-8 1/2 So – Davis isn’t the most sexy pick but he’s a big time talent who is a fierce competitor and ready to play a role right away.
Thunder (from Knicks)Ousmane DiengSF – New Zealand Breakers (France) – HT: 6-10 – WT: 205 – WING: 7-0 – Int.03 – The Thunder trade future first rounders for Ousmane Dieng. Dieng has as much upside as any of the late lottery picks and has a very bright future in the league.
Thunder (from Clippers)Jalen WilliamsSG – Santa Clara – HT: 6-5 3/4 – WT: 209 – WING: 7-2 1/4 – Jr. One of the best stories of this draft season has been the rise of Jalen Williams. He’s super long, versatile and can shoot the ball. Thunder fans should be in love with this draft.
Pistons (from Hornets)Jalen DurenC – Memphis – HT: 6-11 – WT: 250 – WING: 7-5 1/4 – Fr – Duren falls to the Hornets at no.13, which is a bit of a surprise and a steal of a pick here. The Pistons make the move, trading with the Hornets to add Duren alongside Cade and Jaden Ivey.
CavsOchai AgbajiSG – Kansas – HT: 6-5 3/4 – WT: 217 – WING: 6-10 1/4 – Sr – The Cavs go with the senior guard from Kansas, a versatile two-way player who can give them quality minutes right away. Agbaji showed steady improvement during his college career, rising all the way to being a lottery selection. I had him rated a bit lower and thought there was better upside still on the board but you can’t argue with a NBA-ready player for a team looking to win now.
Hornets (from Pelicans)Mark WilliamsC – Duke – HT: 7-2 – WT: 242 – WING: 7-6 1/2 – So – The Hornets trade Duren to Detroit and select Mark Williams to be their center of the future. Williams is an ideal fit with LaMelo and should be on the receiving end of plenty of lobs.
HawksAdrian Griffin Jr.SF – Duke – HT: 6-6 – WT: 200 – WING: 7-0 – Fr – A little bit of a slide for A.J. on draft day but he ends up in a good situation in Atlanta. If he’s able to stay healthy this will be a steal of a pick…but it does come with some question marks.
Rockets (from Nets)Tari EasonSF – LSU – HT: 6-8 – WT: 217 – WING: 7-2 – So – The Rockets add some much needed defense in Eason who is long, versatile and a super hard worker on the court. His shooting is a work in progress but shows promise. Nice selection here for the Rockets.
BullsDalen TerryPG – Arizona – HT: 6-7 1/4 – WT: 195 – WING: 7-0 3/4 – So – Terry has been flying up draft boards for the past month, all the way into the top 20. The Bulls at the unique play-making big guard who contributes in all aspects of the game. He’s a pin-point passer, a stand out defender and brings a ton of personality as well.
Memphis (from T-Wolves)Jake LaRaviaPF – Wake Forest – HT: 6-8 – WT: 227 – WING: 6-9 1/2 – Jr – The Grizzlies trade up for LaRavia who projects as an ideal role player next to their talented young core. LaRavia isn’t the biggest name but he’s a big time talent who can really shoot the ball, defends all over the court and is very young for his class. Really nice fit here.
Spurs (from Raptors)Malaki BranhamSG – Ohio State – HT: 6-5 – WT: 180 – WING: NA – Fr – A big time value pick for the Spurs at no.20, Branham is a polished scorer who really knows how to get to his spot and get his shots, despite not having elite explosiveness. He’ll fit right into the young Spurs line-up as they built their roster back to respectability.
NuggetsChristian BraunSG – Kansas – HT: 6-7 – WT: 209 – WING: 6-6 1/2 – Jr – The Nuggets get an intense, hard-nosed wing who can also space the floor and create some offense. I had him rated lower but this pick makes a lot of sense for the Nuggets and fits what they need around Nikola.
T-Wolves (from Jazz)Walker KesslerC – Auburn – HT: 7-1 – WT: 256 – WING: 7-4 1/4 – So – The Wolves add the shot blocking Kessler to bolster their frontcourt and give KAT some help protecting the paint. This should lead to some interesting big line ups in Minnesota.
Grizzlies (from 76ers)David RoddyPF – Colorado State – HT: 6-6 – WT: 261 – WING: 6-11 1/2 – Jr – The Grizzlies trade Melton to the 76ers in exchange for this pick and select the wide-bodied forward Roddy. He’s a unique talent who can really pass the ball, has range on his jumper and has incredibly quick feet for a player his size.
BucksMarJon Beauchamp SG – G League Ignite – HT: 6-6 1/2 – WT: 197 – WING: 7-0 3/4 – So – The Bucks add the Ignite star who has taken a round-about path to the NBA but hears his name called in the first round and will have a chance to play alongside Giannis. Coming through many challenges along the way, MarJon has persevered and will now have a chance to make his mark in the NBA.
Spurs (from Celtics)Blake Wesley SG – Notre Dame – Ht – 6-4 1/4 – Wt – 187 – Wing – 6-9 1/4 – Fr – Wesley needs more development but his upside is tantalizing, especially getting him at this point in the draft. He might not contribute in year one but the Spurs landed another freaky athletic wing (along with Josh Primo last year) and are building something nice for the future.
T-Wolves (from Mavs)Wendell MooreSF – Duke – HT: 6-5 1/2 – WT: 217 – WING: 7-0 1/2 – Jr – Moore is one of the most versatile and complete players in this class. He might not have elite scoring ability or offensive creation but he does everything on the court, has shown great improvement during his years at Duke and is still only 20 years old.
HeatNikola JovićPF – Serbia – HT: 6-11 – WT: 223 – WING: 7-0 1/4 – Int.03 – This is a steal. Jovic is a big time talent who will benefit greatly from playing in Miami where he’ll be well schooled in the defensive aspects of the game. His offensive talents are impressive. He’s a lottery talent who just has a few areas of his game to clean up.
WarriorsPatrick Baldwin Jr.PF – Wis. Milwaukee – HT: 6-10 1/4 – WT: 231 – WING: 7-1 3/4 – Fr – PBJ had a tough season but still ends up as a first round pick and getting the chance to join one of the elite franchises in the league. He’ll get a chance to regain his momentum and turn things around in SF. 1on1 Interview
Rockets (from Grizzlies)TyTy WashingtonPG – Kentucky – HT: 6-3 – WT: 180 – WING: NA – Fr – If you told me in February that TyTy would fall to no.29 I wouldn’t believe it. But here we are. This is a great fit and a great value selection for the Rockets. TyTy is an underrated passer who will get to distribute the ball to some big time offensive talents in Jalen Green and Jabari Smith Jr. A+ selection here.
NuggetsPeyton WatsonSF – UCLA – HT: 6-8 – WT: 203 – WING: 7-0 1/2 – Fr – Watson is the definition of an upside athlete. He had a limited role last year at UCLA and looked like he could use more time in school but he ends up being a late first round pick thanks to his elite athletic tools and upside. His defensive potential is especially intriguing.
