Seth Godin wrote a piece called How To Be Wrong in his book Tribes. In it he writes:
“The secret of being wrong isn’t to avoid being wrong!
The secret is being willing to be wrong.
The secret is realizing that wrong isn’t fatal.
The only thing that makes people and organizations great is their willingness to be not great along the way. The desire to fail on the way to reaching a bigger goal is the untold secret of success.”
I think this is a great lesson for young basketball players as they work to become college or NBA stars. It’s also a great lesson for NBA General Managers, scouts, coaches, media analysts and those of us who do mock drafts.
Whatever you do in life, whether it’s draining threes, acing math tests or working a 9 to 5, it’s ok to fail along the way. Just give it your best shot and don’t give up.
Tonight, when the trades start happening and players come off the board or start slipping, most of the mock drafts can be thrown out the window. A few will call things right and receive lavish praise. But only because they were willing to be wrong.
