The 2026 NBA Draft class is the strongest in recent memory with 4 or 5 truly elite prospects at the top of the class. Now a new name is challenging the top group and he’s making it very hard to ignore the noise: I’m talking about Illinois combo guard Keaton Wagler.

Keaton Wagler: From Afterthought to Lottery Lock
No player has risen up draft boards more this season than Wagler. Just months ago, Wagler wasn’t considered a Top 100 recruit in the country coming out of high school. Now? He’s projected as a top 10 pick in most mock drafts, with some having him as high as no.6.
The 46 Point Explosion
Wagler’s breakout reached its crescendo on January 24th when he dropped 46 points at Purdue’s Mackey Arena, the most ever by an opposing player at that venue. But this wasn’t a one-game fluke. Just days later, the wonderful Wagler followed it up with 22 points on 7-for-13 shooting against Washington. And he’s been at it all season long.
The 6-foot-6 guard is currently averaging 18.5 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 46.4% from the field and an impressive 43.7% from three-point range. What makes these numbers even more remarkable is his poise and decision-making—over the past month he’s taken over the reigns of the Illinois offense and has been facing defenses geared to stop him. But they can’t. He has had a few “off” games but even in those games he’s getting to the FT line and doing a good job of orchestrating the offense.
Why Scouts Are Believers
With scouting it’s not just about stats; there’s a lot of “eye test” and other intangible things that go into ranking a player. NBA evaluators are drawn to his advanced feel for the game, positional size and the steep upward trajectory he’s on as a prospect.
While he’s not the quickest athlete and isn’t a vertically explosive player he is able to put significant space between himself and defenders using step-backs, crafty dribbles and tricky footwork, showcasing a lot of creativity with the ball in his hands. In the above video watch how he dances with the ball, moving side to side and back before getting into the lane. He’s really incredible at creating space despite not having traditional run/jump athletic ability. I know it’s a lofty comparison but I can’t help but see some hints of SGA in his game.
His versatility and play-making are a major selling point. He’s had multiple 10-assist games that show off his awesome passing IQ and ability to manipulate defenses. He’s not the purest of point guards but I do consider him a point guard and a guy I would love to have running my offense if I were a coach. And in today’s positionless NBA it doesn’t really matter if he’s better on or off the ball. The kid can do both and do both at a very high level.
Keaton Wagler’s NBA Projection
Big dribble/pass/shoot guards like Wagler are very much in vogue in the league. He sometimes gets compared to Jamal Murray due to his scoring craft, shooting touch, pacing, and basketball IQ. Like Murray, Wagler projects as someone who could develop from an off-ball guard into a more complete on-ball creator with time and development. And as I mentioned above I see a little (just a little) bit of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in his game.
The consensus among scouts is clear: if he maintains this level of production through league play and into mid March he’s a top 10 lock with a chance to go in the top half of the lottery. That’s a big jump from not being on a single draft board to start the season, especially in such a loaded draft class.
