Yes, this draft class is loaded but whichever lucky team lands the number one pick will have a really, really tough decision to make on June 24th, and the consequences of a wrong decision could be staggering.
Some drafts have a clear, consensus top pick and the team choosing at the top of the draft can’t go wrong. This year the team with the number one pick will be forced to pass on at least two elite level talents and if they pass on the wrong guy the choice could set the franchise back for years and cost the GM his job.

At this point in the draft cycle it appears that there are three very good opinions for the first pick (Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa and Cam Boozer) but we’ve seen over and over again that highly rated prospects don’t always live up to the hype and even the best prospects can bust. I don’t think any of the big three (or big four with Caleb Wilson) will bust but I think there is a real chance that only one of these guys will be a superstar/franchise altering talent while the other guys might merely be solid All Star level players. Deciding who will be the superstar and so who to pick at number one is quite the conundrum.
Does Darryn Peterson Deserve To Be The Top Pick?
In my eyes Peterson is clearly the most talented prospect in the class but that doesn’t make it an easy decision at the top of the draft. It’s been a strange year for the Kansas guard who has flashed his elite talent but has also missed a lot of time with a nagging leg injury that has clearly slowed him down when he able to be on the court.
It’s also been strange to see just how good this Kansas team has been when he’s not on the floor and that they seem to be fine without him. Again, that’s not trying to knock DP, he’s my top ranked prospect in this really strong draft, but it’s important to point out some of the things that have been going on with him this year.
Some have questioned DP’s competitiveness and how committed he is to his team. I think that’s bogus. He’s clearly not fully healthy and is in a tough position of wanting to help his team and show his stuff, while also not wanting to worsen his injury.
We’re about four months away from the 2026 NBA Draft and so there’s a chance that he gets back to full health and is able to show off his explosive athleticism before draft day. Maybe we’ll see it in March or maybe we’ll have to wait until the rumor mill of the pre-draft process.
Having a fully healthy Darryn Peterson would make the selection a lot easier for whichever NBA GM is picking at no.1. But if DP is still hindered by the leg/muscle issue in June picking him over AJ and Cam would be a really hard choice to make. Conundrum.
Is AJ Dybantsa A Safer Top Pick?
AJ has some flaws to his game but a lack of intensity is surely not one of them. He’s a warrior on the court who never takes a play off and who will play every minute of every game if that’s what his team needs. He’ll lock up opposing wings with a level of intensity that makes them think twice about trying to dribble against him. And of course his greatest strength is his intense bully-ball drives to the rim where he uses his long strides, unique lateral agility, speed and power to get to the cup.
As he matures in his game his 3pt shooting should level out at a nice clip, probably in the high 30’s, which will continue to open up his driving and mid range game. His passing instincts have also developed nicely and he’s showing that he can be a point-forward type who draws a lot of defensive attention and can spray the ball out to shooters or find cutters going to the basket.
Dybantsa seems to have “NBA Superstar” written all over him and passing on him at no.1 would be really hard. There aren’t any red flags that have come up this season and he’s proving game after game that he’s a stud. He seems like he’s a sure thing to be really, really good in the NBA and might be the safest bet at the top of the draft.
But then again, if Darryn Peterson is fully healthy could a team pass on him for AJ? Conundrum.
Cam Boozer Is A Machine But Lacks Upside
When I say lacks upside I don’t mean that he’s already topped out or that he won’t develop into a perennial All Star. He very well might. But his lack of length, burst and vertical pop somewhat limit his defensive impact and make him a bit less of a dynamic two-way player.
OK, let’s be clear, Cam Boozer is an absolute stud on the offensive end with his elite combination of skill, strength and feel for the game. He’s incredibly efficient, scores in every which way and is an elite decision maker.
We’ve seen numerous examples in recent years of not-so athletic players dominating in the NBA; think Nikola Jokic, Luka Doncic etc. Cam Boozer doesn’t need to be a run/jump athlete in order to be elite. I’m just saying his upside would be higher if he did have better bounce and burst.
In some drafts Cam Boozer would seem like a really good top pick. In this loaded draft class it might feel like settling for a surefire star player when two potential superstar players are on the board. Conundrum.
Caleb Wilson The Wild Card
Caleb Wilson has played so well this season that he’s turned the big three into a big four. Now I don’t think he’ll be the top pick in the draft, especially with his recent hand injury, which will keep him out for at least a few weeks, but it’s within the realm of possibilities that he becomes the best player from this draft class.
Wilson has such awesome athleticism and plays with so much intensity that it looks like the sky is the limit for him. When it comes to just pure upside he’s right up there with DP and AJ as the best in the draft. But even if you believe in his upside you just can’t take him over the other, bigger name prospects. Conundrum.
Quite The Conundrum!
Obviously, winning the first pick in the draft lottery is a huge win for a NBA team. But whichever team is picking in that top spot will be under a ton of pressure to get the pick right. With so many special talents in this draft class choosing the one single guy that will be better than the rest is a really hard ask.
We won’t know until a few years down the line if the top pick ends up being the right pick. But we know for certain that making that top pick in June will be a really hard pick to make. Conundrum.
Thanks so much for reading and please give it a share if you enjoyed. Cheers.
