Hot Takes For The 2024 NBA Draft

Do you know how sometimes you have a gut feeling about a player that doesn’t line-up with consensus or with the mainstream view? When this happens it’s good to take a second and a third look at the player, try to see what you’re missing and consider all points of view. But at the end of the day it’s usually a good idea to listen to your instincts and go with your gut.

I want to take a minute to share some of my gut feelings/hot takes for this year’s draft class, that don’t really line-up with consensus but that my gut is telling me are true. These aren’t completely wild takes, so calling them “hot takes” might be a bit of hyperbole but they’re far enough off the mainstream that they have me taking a second and third look, to see if I’m missing something. Here it goes:

Tyler Kolek has real star upside. I’m not saying he’s the next Steve Nash… but I’m not saying he’s not!

While he might not be the prototypical high-upside point guard that teams love to draft in the lottery I think when we look back at this draft in five or ten years we’ll wonder why he wasn’t drafted in the top 14.

He’s such an incredibly crafty player, who scores in so many ways, manipulates the defense like a 10-year vet and is a special passer. He can shoot the heck out of the ball and is an awesome finisher around the rim – skills that I think will translate well. I’d love to see him on a playoff team, where he could impact winning from day one.
