An Elite Group Of International Prospects In The 2024 Draft

There have been plenty of lamentations about the apparent weakness of the 2024 NBA draft class but a quick look at the group of international prospects gives us a lot of reason for excitement.

Overall it is fair to say that there is no elite Tier-1, franchise-altering talent in this class but there are plenty of exciting prospects emerging near the top of the draft and good overall depth. Some of the top prospects are playing college ball or with the G League Ignite but many of the top names in this class are from overseas – and so therefor many fans won’t be as familiar with them.

It is likely that we see three international prospects drafted in the top 5 (Risarcher, Sarr and Topic), while a fourth (Salaun) could be a top 10 pick.  Overall we could see about half of this year’s first round picks be either international players (including those already playing in the U.S.).

For the sake of this article I’ve broken the international prospects down into four groups and then added in a list of the top international players already playing in the U.S.

Group 1 – Lottery Talents

  1. Alexandre Sarr – PF/C  – Perth, NBL (France) – Sarr has really freaky athletic ability for a 7-1 player and the flashes he shows are elite. His defense has a chance to be truly special, with his ability to defend at the rim and guard in space. He changes ends in a flash and moves more like a small forward than a center. He’s not yet consistent on the offensive end and still figuring out how to put it all together, so a team will have to be patient with his development. He does show flashes of 3pt shooting ability and some open court ball handling and play-making skills…but it’s a work in progress.
